About The Anchor Society

The Anchor Society is a community-focused charity dedicated to supporting older generations in need. We partner with local agencies to provide essential resources, support programs and opportunities that foster self-sufficiency and resilience for our communities in their later years. Our work is rooted in compassion, collaboration and a commitment to supporting older people to live independently and with dignity.

The Anchor Society was founded in 1769 to help the poor and elderly in Bristol and over 250 years later, its mission remains largely the same. The tradition of raising money through ‘collections’ continues to this day in the form of the President’s Annual Appeal.  You can find a list of our past presidents here

Our impact is also significantly enhanced by legacies such as that of benefactor Joyce Needham Cooper. And our partnership with many organisations and charities supporting older people in need, extends our reach to thousands of beneficiaries in the Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area.

About Us

"I'm pleased as punch to have my scooter back. The boy's that fixed it did a great job.”

“The scooter has been a godsend! It's brilliant. I am able to go out without having to ask either of my children for help. I'm able to be independent again”

Without your help nothing would have ever got better about their heating so next winter the same situation would have been the way it was. You have probably effectively saved two lives by doing what you do/did. They have no savings, no rich relatives and nothing to sell…”
